About The Awesome
Award winning songwriter Milena Cifali forms the creative backbone of Mallacoota based duo The Awesome, self proclaimed musical gypsies. Having studied composition/classical guitar at ANU with the legendary Timothy Kain, she is admirably equipped as one of Australia's leading female guitarists and an acclaimed singer songwriter.
Her French/Italian background, love of Bossa Nova/Jazz, and her Classical/Latin music background allows Milena to draw from a richly diverse tapestry in her songwriting.
Coupled with extensive touring from desert to ocean and Milena's passion for poetry, she is able to draw audiences in with her warm onstage presence, gift for storytelling, and her subject matter: nature, from desert to ocean and beyond, human nature, love lost, and found... and love for the earth. Milena was awarded a commendation in 2019 in the UK International Songwriting Competition for her song One Step Better and was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition 202020 for 'Falling Into You'.
Empathetically supported by Hungarian Jim Horvath on upright bass, whose background includes drum tuition by legendary Stui Spears from Max Merret, and drumming with blues band Chain, The Awesome perform the Festival circuit including National and Cobargo Folk Festivals, Merimbula Jazz, and Alice Springs Beanie Festivals.
Milena's impressive body of work includes an album of compositions set to the poetry of published poet John Passant, a classical guitar album Continuum featuring Milena's works for guitar, guitar duo, and flute and guitar, and Poplar Road, original songs with a Jazz influence.
